½ cup REAL butter
2/3 cup shortening
1 Tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoon baking powder
1-teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon dry milk powder
3 cups flour
½ cup cold water
Mix butter and shortening together.
Add half the flour and all of the dry ingredients.
Mix.
Add the rest of flour and water. (Makes 2 double crusts)
Roll out very thin with plenty of flour.
Carefully put in pie plates and prick with fork all over.
Bake 400 degrees for 8 minutes, or until lightly browned.

The Key to a flaky pie crust
The Key to a flaky pie crust
is to NOT try to make the dough look perfect and don't overwork it or it will make it stiff.
(OR you can use ALL butter instead of butter and shortening---if you choose this option it is 20 Tbsp. of butter or 2-1/2 sticks)
Enjoy!
I am DEAD.
ReplyDeleteYou KNEW this post would kill me right?
With the pie pictures LOOKING this fabulous.. the taste would surely kill me. :)
FYI: When I was little.. pie crust was my favorite food on the planet. My Mom would bake a pie ( or pies ) and I would sneak in and break off the beautiful edges just to feast on it.. and all it's glory.
My Mom would try to be mad... but it made her happy that I loved it sooo much as well....
OK one more "Kimmie" recipe to try.
ReplyDeleteI'm a miserable failure at pie crusts. Just ask Howie.
He has my very first piecrust in his pocket right now.....he made a wallet out of it.

ReplyDeleteI have always used just shortening in my pie crusts and they're lacking in flavor and personality! I'm going to add butter from now on if the crust turns out as beautifully as yours!
ReplyDeleteI love pie, too! Wow they all look amazing. I'm going to try your recipe.
